Do I need a referral to see Dr. Wodicka?

No, a referral is not required to schedule a first visit.

Many patients arrive here after a referral from another physician, and Dr. Wodicka's sports medicine fellowship training at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute is one reason primary care doctors and other specialists send patients with sports-related joint and shoulder concerns his way. If you already have a referral, bring the paperwork with you. If you don't, you can still call the office directly to schedule.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and a list of the medications you currently take.

If you've had X-rays, an MRI, or other imaging done elsewhere, bring copies or ask that office to send the images ahead of time. Bring any paperwork from a referring physician too, since much of this practice's care starts with a referral.

How long will my first visit take?

Plan for about an hour.

That time covers checking in, a conversation about your injury or joint concern, a physical exam, and imaging if it's needed the same day.

What happens during the visit?

You'll start with check-in and paperwork, then talk with Dr. Wodicka or a member of his care team about your history and symptoms.

He'll examine the joint or area involved, looking at how it moves and where it hurts, consistent with his focus in sports medicine. If imaging would help complete the picture, it's usually done before you leave.

Will I need an X-ray at my first visit?

Sometimes, but not every visit calls for one.

Whether you need imaging depends on your injury, the exam findings, and what's needed to explain what's going on and what your options are.

What happens after my first visit?

You'll leave with a plan, whether that means starting treatment, scheduling a follow-up, or getting a referral for further evaluation.

If your primary care doctor or another specialist sent you here, this office typically sends that physician a summary of your visit.
